Practical tools for lowering everyday exposures at home: what’s in your water, what you breathe indoors, and what goes on your skin and into your cleaning cabinet. Small, steady changes add up.
Check your tap water
Start by finding out what’s in your water. Then you can choose a filter that matches what you actually need to remove.
- Environmental Working Group (EWG): Tap Water DatabaseEnter your ZIP code to see contaminants your water utility has reported, compared with legal limits and EWG’s own, stricter health guidelines.
Filter your drinking water
Different filters remove different contaminants. Match the filter to your water report, and change cartridges on schedule.
- Under-sink reverse osmosis filters: Consumer Picks rankingsA comparison of popular under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) systems, which can reduce a wide range of contaminants.
- Waterdrop reverse osmosis filtration systemAn under-sink reverse osmosis system.
- Clearly Filtered water pitcherA countertop pitcher filter for people who can’t install an under-sink system, such as renters.
Tip: Look for independent certification, such as NSF/ANSI standards, for the specific contaminants you want to reduce. If you use a private well, test it first with a certified lab.
Clean your indoor air
A good air purifier can lower indoor particles, which helps during wildfire smoke and while you address moisture or mold problems at home. It doesn’t replace fixing the source.
- Jaspr air scrubberA home air purifier with HEPA and carbon filters and real-time air sensors.
- Intellipure air purifiersAir purifiers designed to reduce allergens and particles in homes and offices.
Tip: Choose a unit with a true HEPA filter that doesn’t produce ozone, sized for the room, and replace filters on schedule.
Choose safer everyday products
Personal care, cleaning and household products can add to your daily chemical load. These tools make it easier to check ingredients and find safer options.
- EWG apps (Healthy Living and Skin Deep)Scan barcodes or search to see EWG’s ratings for personal care products, cleaners and foods.
- MADEWORKS Index: certified products catalogA catalog of products certified to MADEWORKS’ human-health and ingredient-safety standards.
- Safer MadeA venture fund that invests in companies and technologies replacing hazardous chemicals in consumer products, and a way to discover brands working on safer chemistry.
Learn more about chemicals and health

- Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (BCPP)A nonprofit focused on reducing exposure to toxic chemicals linked to breast cancer, with consumer guides.
- CHEM TrustA charity working to protect people and wildlife from harmful chemicals, with clear explainers on endocrine disruptors.

Start with your home

Water and air filters help, but the biggest step is often finding and fixing the source, such as hidden water damage and mold. Use the free mold & toxin checklist, take the 3-minute quiz, or read your state’s home health guide: Arizona, Montana or Washington.
