Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Millions of men use prescription testosterone gels or injections to treat what the medical marketing industry calls “low T,” or testosterone deficiency in adult men. Low-dose bio-identical testosterone is prescribed at Apollo Health Clinic to restore true testosterone deficiencies with a comprehensive and holistic treatment plan different than “low T” clinics.
The benefits of restoring testosterone levels are clear, though the methodology behind this treatment can be confusing and lead to problematic side effects.
By replacing lost or lowered levels of testosterone, adult males can feel more alert, energetic, mentally cognizant, and sexually functional. However, without careful guidance and professional treatment, these patients may face higher risks of cardiac problems, which is why all male patients are screened for cardiovascular disease markers prior beginning Testosterone Therapy at Apollo Health Clinic.
For men, Testosterone cypionate or propionate is compounded in the pharmacy and injected intramuscularly in the gluteus medius or thighs or applied as a topical compounded testosterone cream.
Signs of Low Testosterone
- Compromised self-confidence
- Trouble concentrating
- Disturbed sleep
- Lowered sex drive
- Difficulty sustaining or achieving an erection
- Decreased muscle or bone mass
- Increased body fat
- Flushing/hot flashes
- Swollen and tender breasts
What’s different about TRT at Apollo Health Clinic?
Since a small number of men experience side effects associated with testosterone supplementation, Dr. Madeira has created a specialized, unique, safe and effective method of delivering treatment to get the best results from TRT. He has developed this holistic treatment after seeing a sub-group of men not respond to the one-size-fits all approach of TRT offered by many other low T clinics. Therefore, all risk factors, genetics, liver health & metabolism, kidney function, cardiovascular health, and cellular methylation function are all treated appropriately prior to TRT and during treatment for optimal health and safety.
Some researchers have found men who undergo testosterone treatments experience fewer cardiovascular problems; others state men are at greater risk of cardiovascular complications as a result of testosterone replacement therapy. For this reason Dr. Madeira always checks cardiovascular risk factors and performs comprehensive advanced cardiovascular disease testing prior to prescribing men TRT.
BHRT is the use of molecularly identical hormones to balance deficiencies in such hormone levels to improve overall health, energy, and sexual dysfunctions. We will assess your symptoms and hormone levels with the appropriate medical intake and laboratory tests. Then, we’ll prescribe the appropriate dose and type of compounded natural hormones to balance your deficient hormones. It is important to always contact the clinic for consistent follow-up lab testing while under care for hormone therapy. BHRT is Natural Testosterone Replacement Therapy for men and Natural Estrogen and/or Progesterone Replacement Therapy for women.
Dr. Madeira has personally treated thousands of men successfully and safely with erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and decreased strength and endurance related to hormone deficiencies.
Female Hormone Replacement Therapy
No one wants to suffer from the symptoms of imbalanced hormones, such as fatigue, mood swings, heavy & irregular menses, low sex drive, increased body fat, vaginal pain or dryness and more. Here at Apollo Health Clinic, we have a solution for these health concerns and more. We offer natural Bio-Identical Hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) for treating Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), Perimenopause, Menopause, and Aging in women. We only prescribe the lowest dose needed of BHRT, no synthetic hormones are used since they can cause cancers and lead to other adverse effects, such as bloating, breast tenderness, depression, & low sex drive, which are symptoms we typically treat with BHRT. By using bio-identical estrogen, progesterone, and even testosterone as needed in select cases in women, we can treat common symptoms of perimenopause and menopause for most all women, and even balance moods, elicit brain health, cardiovascular health, and look and feel better.
By the time a woman’s period stops, hormone levels fall, resulting in uncomfortable physical symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and conditions like osteoporosis. By the time menopause arrives in a women’s life hormones are already drastically in disharmony. You see the endocrine system is like a symphony orchestra, when one of the players is out of tune or balance all of them are affected and then we feel horrible. And by the time we have severe symptoms, these hormones have been low for quite some time.
About the DUTCH Test
Apollo Health Clinic uses one of the most advanced hormone tests available to date called, The DUTCH test, or Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones. The DUTCH test measures hormones and hormone metabolites in a dried urine sample that can be self-administered from a patient’s home. Because the DUTCH test measures hormones metabolites in addition to hormones, the results are much more accurate and can provide your healthcare provider at Apollo Health Clinic with a more complete picture of your body’s hormone production.
The DUTCH test measures the following:
– Progesterone, estrogen, and androgen and their metabolites
– 6-OH melatonin-sulfate

Botanical medicine (or herbal medicine) has been part of medicine for over 6,000 years. It is a key modality in naturopathic medicine. Botanical medicine is a powerful natural therapy. Every culture worldwide uses herbs in cooking and medicine to this day. One or more plant medicines are used to treat your overall constitutional excesses and deficiencies, as well as your acute and chronic ailments. Botanical medicines will be prescribed in capsule, pill, liquid extract (tincture), or tea form. Dr. Madeira has been studying and using botanical medicine for years. Please see the Blog page for information about some specific herbal remedies. Currently, Dr. Madeira is prescribing botanical medicines to optimize his patients’ own production of hormones and to balance hormones produced from the thyroid, adrenals, gonads (testes or ovaries), and the endocrine gland stimulating hormones, such as Thyroid Stimulating Hormone for the thyroid gland. His functional physical exam and laboratory analysis give him information on which hormones need to be optimized.
Medical nutritional approaches are unique to each patient’s needs, health goals, medical history, and family medical history. Using specific laboratory testing for gastrointestinal health, cardiovascular health, nutrient deficiencies, as well as genetic mutations, which all contribute to disease processes, together we can come up with a dietary and vitamin and mineral supplement treatment plan for your health goals and optimal wellness. This is a foundation to any natural treatment at the clinic and the most important. Nutrition is a foundation of health. Dr. Madeira will perform laboratory tests to find your food allergies, nutrient deficiencies, and genetic mutations (SNPs = single nucleotide polymorphisms) to holistically assess your nutritional status and create the optimal nutritional plan for your maximum health. As the ancient Greek Physician, Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.”
“Functional medicine (aka – Naturopathic Medicine) addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.”
In today’s complex ecosystem we are exposed to a multitude of chemicals, which act as endocrine disruptors leading to obesity, fatigue, neuroendocrine diseases, chronic fatigue, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, along with other conditions. Together we can apply modern laboratory testing to assess your chemical load and specific treatment options to detoxify your body for optimal mental clarity, pain relief, relief of chronic fatigue and intractable insomnia and other stubborn medical conditions not understood properly treated. It is not our aim to live in fear of our environment, however to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle free of excessive chemical exposures and to optimize your physiological endogenous detoxification processes in your body through breathing, optimizing liver and kidney function, and optimizing cellular pathways for correct excretion of toxins.
Biofeedback is a therapy that works to help balance the autonomic nervous system and therefore enables you to control your heart rate and blood pressure and other bodily functions. Often in our rushed and high stress society our nervous system is spends too much time in overdrive (the sympathetic branch of the nervous system or “fight and flight”). Biofeedback is a method that helps people see when they are in a state of high stress response and gives them tools to correct this subconscious approach in all areas of their life outside of the biofeedback sessions. In our biofeedback sessions, we will re-learn how to breathe, you will look at a computer screen with a sensor attached to a finger to read your heart rate variability (HRV). The screen will give you feedback with different diagrams and graphics showing you your current state. You will practice breathing exercises and relaxing your muscles and be given homework to practice outside of your biofeedback visits.
There is much scientific evidence showing how HRV and Biofeedback are an effective tool for many health conditions.
Indications: Dr. Madeira has worked with patients with Anxiety, Depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, PTSD, Chronic Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Pain and seen great results with Biofeedback.
Dr. Madeira likes to combine using Biofeedback and Craniosacral Therapy with patients who are willing to explore this powerful and effective combination treatment.
Cardiovascular diseases are among the most pervasive chronic conditions in medicine. Caused by atheroma, or small fatty lumps that form along arterial walls in the body, the presence of cardiovascular problems is often hard to detect without careful monitoring and testing.
Who Should Undergo Cardiovascular Testing?
Adults over 40 and those with a history of cardiovascular diseases in their family should undergo cardiovascular testing in order to determine risk factors and make necessary steps toward improving their cardiovascular health.
If a member of your family has developed early cardiovascular problems (before ages 55-65) or if an immediate family member has a serious hereditary lipid disorder, you should undergo cardiovascular testing.
How Does the Assessment Work?
Cardiovascular tests typically include a verbal questionnaire to determine your family’s health history and various lifestyle factors that may contribute to cardiovascular problems. These factors include smoking, poor diet, sedentary lifestyles, diabetes, heavy drinking, and obesity.
The medical professional will perform a blood test for blood cholesterol and glucose levels as well as blood pressure measurements. From there, your risk factors will be determined by calculating this data alongside your age, sex, ethnicity, and family history.
About the Assessment Score
Each patient is issued a score based on a percentage, which estimates the individual’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease. This percentage is based on probability over a period of ten years.
The results are classified in three categories:
– High risk – scores of 20% or more are considered at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in the next decade.
– Moderate risk – scores between 10-20% suggest a 1-10 or 2-10 chance of developing a cardiovascular disease within the next ten years. Those at moderate risk of cardiovascular disease should be re-assessed on an annual basis.
– Low risk – scores below 10% are considered at low risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. These patients should be tested once every five years.
About the Boston Heart Diagnostics Test
Boston Heart Diagnostics Lab Testing was developed by the leading researchers and clinicians in Advanced Cardiovascular disease testing. Simply put, the Boston Heart health diagnostics testing tests: Genetics (Statin Induced Myopathy (SLOCO1B1) Genotype Test – how people will respond to statin medications; methylation status via MTHFR genetic mutation; ApoB Status to rule out genetic inheritance and predisposition to early heart attacks and strokes and response to nutritional therapy; LPA inheritance of CVD); Fatty Acid Balance Test (find out how much saturated fat, omega 3 and 6 Fatty acids you have and what you need); Pre-diabetes Assessment Test, HDL Map Test, and Cholesterol Balance Test, Inflammation Tests, and fractionated Lipids.
If You Are at Moderate or High Risk
Treatment options are available for those at moderate to high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. While medication is available to treat symptoms of cardiovascular diseases, most medical professionals will recommend lifestyle changes in addition to medical treatments. Statin medicines to lower cholesterol and blood pressure medication are typically prescribed, as is smoking cessation, dietary changes, weight reduction, regular physical activity, and reduction in alcohol consumption.
Furthermore, you may be referred to specialists for treatment with dietitians or a health coach, smoking cessation clinics, and supervised exercise regiments common solutions.

Neurotransmitters are natural chemicals developed within the brain that help facilitate communication between nerve cells throughout the body. Some examples of neurotransmitters include acetylcholine, serotonin, GABA, dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine, and glutamate.
Why Test Neurotransmitter Levels?
Neurotransmitters help receptors in the brain to influence and regulate several processes in the body, including mental acuity, emotions, pain response, and energy levels. Studies have shown that inadequate neurotransmitter function can have a tremendous impact on health and well-being.
Some conditions associated with neurotransmitters are:
– Mood disorders
– Lack of mental clarity
– Addiction and substance abuse
– Hormone imbalances for Men and Women
– E2 dominance and deficiency
– Lack of appetite control
– Resistance to insulin
Furthermore, some of these symptoms can be influenced by bioactive substances such as alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and medications, which can deplete and suppress neurotransmitter functions. Chronic pain can also deplete neurotransmitters in the body.
Testing for neurotransmitters is fairly straightforward. Consisting of a simple saliva and urine test that measures the building blocks of neurotransmitters (along with the neurotransmitters themselves), physicians can measure the correlation between hormones and neurotransmitters to help bring those levels into balance.
Benefits of Neurotransmitter Testing
Clinical research has determined several key benefits in neurotransmitter testing, including the detection of imbalances that could aggravate or exasperate certain conditions or illnesses. You may notice improved moods, increased energy, deeper sleep, increased sex hormone levels, and greater overall well being. Overtime more severe and chronic mood disorders, such as Depression and Anxiety will lessen and can potentially resolve with comprehensive care at Apollo Health Clinic.
Testing analyzes the levels of twelve different neurotransmitters found in the human body. After results are complete, a medical professional can assess these levels and make individualized recommendations to help restore balances you’ve been lacking. These may include supplements, natural replacements, or vitamins and minerals as well as dietary alterations.
